This fall’s Health & Wellness Challenge to kick off on October 19
Western New Yorkers are encouraged to get up, get moving, and start living healthier by taking part in this fall’s Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge. The latest round of this popular program will run from October 19 through November 29 and is open to the entire community. Participants will once again be eligible to win a variety of prizes.

We’re excited to be offering a comprehensive range of plan options for 2021, along with consistent premium rates and enhanced benefits.


September 18, 2020:
Independent Health to offer new, innovative product offerings for 2021
Independent Health has long set the standard for introducing new, innovative products and benefits that are first to market locally and nationally. Now, Independent Health is again a market trendsetter with new products and benefits for 2021. Its new product, thRed, will include expanded virtual visits, a powerful home-grown mobile app and rewards for various health and well-being efforts, including community volunteering. Other new benefits include a deductible plan with first-dollar coverage with a roll-over option – Activate Silver - and Health Savings Account with no monthly maintenance fee.

Independent Health Foundation & Buffalo Bills Foundation partner to collect 20 tons of food for 2020 to benefit FeedMore WNY. With the growing need of food insecurity in our community, let’s Huddle for Hunger!


August 13, 2020:
Independent Health announces rate decreases for 2021 small group and individual products
Independent Health’s commercial product offerings for 2021 will have something for almost everyone: the lowest rate adjustments in years and new products that build upon the company’s commitment to engage members and providers through innovation and technology. The small group rates will drop an average of 2.7% from current levels, and the individual, direct-pay plans will decrease an average of 5.3%.


August 4, 2020:
Reddy Bikeshare, in Partnership with Independent Health, Expands with 11 New Locations, 40 Additional Bikes
Reddy Bikeshare, in partnership with Independent Health, announced today that 11 new stations and 40 new bikes have been added to the fleet in the City of Buffalo for a total of 240 bikes and 55 stations now available. This expansion marks the first time bikes have been added to the fleet in Buffalo since the program launched on July 21, 2016 with 200 bikes. With 145 bikes and 30 stations in Niagara Falls, Reddy Bikeshare now provides a total of 385 bikes at 85 stations in the Buffalo-Niagara region.


August 3, 2020:
Independent Health deepens its partnership with the Brook Health Companion app by launching an enhanced nutrition feature to make it easier to stay healthy
Independent Health today announced it is deepening its partnership with Brook, the innovative Seattle-based health-technology company that helps individuals take better care of their health. Based on the expanding needs of its users, Brook is broadening its feature-set to give actionable tools to augment the personalized, on-demand health support provided 24-hours a day, from real health experts.


July 16, 2020:
$1.00 Annual Passes Available to Essential Workers
Reddy Bikeshare in partnership with Independent Health, with support from the Better Bike Share Partnership, is offering $1.00 annual passes to essential workers until 500 total passes are redeemed. Membership discounts also available to the public to accommodate increased demand for biking.


July 14, 2020:
Helping employers address mental illness in the workplace though a unique initiative by Independent Health and Horizons Health Services
Mental Health Toolkit supports leadership and associates of employers throughout WNY. Increasingly, even before our current societal challenges, employers are seeking to retain and ensure a productive workforce by addressing overall health and wellness, which includes mental health concerns experienced by one in five adults, according to the National Alliance on Mental Illness.


May 29, 2020:
Independent Health to Continue Covering All Costs for COVID-19 treatment
Independent Health announced today that it will continue to waive copayments or cost-sharing for COVID-19 medical treatment for its fully insured employer groups, Medicare Advantage, Medicaid, and individual plan members until further notice. Early last month the company announced it would cover COVID-19 treatment with no member liability through May 31, 2020, which it now extended due to the continued prevalence of the virus.

J.D. Power Recognizes Independent Health for Highest Member Satisfaction Among Commercial Health Plans in New York State
Independent Health is the highest-ranked health insurance plan for member satisfaction among Commercial Health Plans in New York State, according to J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Commercial Member Health Plan Study℠.


May 8, 2020:
Independent Health Foundation, Independent Health, and Pegula Sports & Entertainment Distribute Free Wellness Bags and Produce to East Side Families at Northland Workforce Training Center
The Independent Health Foundation and Independent Health teamed up with Pegula Sports & Entertainment to support underserved families in the City of Buffalo by providing essential items during the COVID-19 pandemic at the Northland Workforce Training Center.


April 23, 2020:
WNY Community Leaders are Pledging Their Personal Financial Support in Response to COVID-19 Crisis
More than 20 local community leaders have joined forces to launch the Community Leaders Response Fund, pledging their personal financial support in response to the COVID-19 crisis we are facing together. The community leader support effort is being led by Michael W. Cropp, M.D., President & CEO of Independent Health.


April 20, 2020:
Stay active and connected with this spring’s Health & Wellness Challenge
Independent Health and the Buffalo Bills are encouraging Western New Yorkers to stay active and connected by taking part in this spring’s Health & Wellness Challenge. This fun and engaging program will take place from April 27 through June 7. Participants will be eligible to win a variety of prizes by moving more, eating better and drinking water.


April 1, 2020:
Independent Health Partners with Brook Personal Health Companion to Provide Western New York Community Access to Health Support During COVID-19 Emergency
Independent Health today announced it is expanding its partnership with Brook, an innovative Seattle-based technology company, to offer the Western New York community free access to the Brook Personal Health Companion App for the duration of the COVID-19 health emergency.


February 14, 2020:
Reddy Bikeshare and Independent Health Report Best Results Yet in 2019, and Look Forward to Continued Expansion in 2020
Reddy Bikeshare and Independent Health officials announced final results for the 4th season of the bikeshare program in the city of Buffalo, including the first season in the city of Niagara Falls. Both organizations are once again extremely pleased with the community’s incredible support and enthusiasm, and look forward to Reddy Bikeshare’s expansion in Buffalo this year.


December 30, 2019:
Thousands of Western New Yorkers take part in the Health & Wellness Challenge
The Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge continues to motivate Western New Yorkers to get active, eat right and take charge of their health. More than 33,000 individuals were registered for the 11th Health & Wellness Challenge, which ran from October 21 through December 1. In addition, a $5,000 cash grand prize was awarded to one lucky Tonawanda resident.


October 17, 2019:
Independent Health recognized as one of the best insurance companies for Medicare Advantage coverage by U.S. News & World Report
Independent Health has been named to U.S. News & World Report’s annual list of the best health insurance companies offering Medicare Advantage coverage in 2020. Independent Health is only one of two health plans in New York state to make this year’s list.


October 10, 2019:
East Aurora is the newest rural location for Good for the Neighborhood
Free and open to the public, this Good for the Neighborhood will offer flu shots, health screenings – including for blood pressure, cholesterol and glucose – performed by professionals from Wegmans, fresh Fall produce for attendees to take home, raffle prizes, and fun activities for kids.

Independent Health once again among the nation’s highest-rated health plans
Independent Health is one of the highest-rated health insurance plans in the nation for clinical quality and member satisfaction, according to the 2019-2020 Private/Commercial Health Insurance Plan Ratings by the National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA). Overall, Independent Health received a 4.5 out of 5 rating for its HMO/POS (Private/Commercial) plan.

Reddy Bikeshare and Independent Health honor the bikeshare program’s third full year in the City of Buffalo with a week-long celebration that provides opportunities for members to get out and explore Buffalo by bike.

Health & Wellness Challenge achieves participation milestone
The Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge continues to inspire Western New Yorkers to become more engaged in their own health and well-being. More than 30,000 individuals registered for the 10th Health & Wellness Challenge, which ran from April 29 through June 9. Plus, one lucky participant was awarded a $5,000 cash grand prize.


May 20, 2019:
Independent Health announces new partnership with HealthEquity
Independent Health is pleased to announce a new partnership with HealthEquity, one of the leading administrators of Health Savings Accounts (HSAs) in the nation. Through this new collaboration, Independent Health is now the only health plan in Western New York that offers an HSA product with complete integrated enrollment and claims payment solutions that makes it easier for employers and members to manage, use and maximize an HSA.


May 10, 2019:
Media statement regarding privacy event
On March 19, 2019, an Independent Health employee inadvertently emailed documents containing the protected health information (PHI) of 7,605 members to one unauthorized recipient. The recipient notified Independent Health of the error within an hour of receiving the email on March 19, 2019. We promptly sought, and received, confirmation the email was deleted from the recipient’s inbox.


April 25, 2019:
This year’s Kids Run to feature families, fitness and fun!
The Independent Health Foundation invites all Western New Yorkers to register for this year’s Kids Run, which will be held at 9 a.m., Saturday, June 1, in Delaware Park. The 31st annual free event will include a mini-dash for children ages 2 to 5 and a 1.8-mile family run/walk for all ages. In addition, a diaper derby will be held for all babies who crawl.


April 22, 2019:
10th Health & Wellness Challenge to kick off on April 29
The Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge is set to kick off for the 10th time! The entire community is encouraged to celebrate the milestone by participating in this fun and engaging program, which will take place from April 29 through June 9. Participants will be eligible to win a variety of prizes by moving more, eating better and drinking water.


March 5, 2019:
Reddy BikeShare in Partnership with Independent Health to Launch in City of Niagara Falls in 2019
Bikesharing will become available to Niagara Falls residents and visitors later this year. Reddy Bikeshare, in partnership with Independent Health, will continue to be operated by non-profit Shared Mobility Inc., but with additional support from the City of Niagara Falls. Bringing Reddy bikes to Niagara Falls is part of the city’s ongoing plans to encourage bicycling and to make the area more bike-friendly.


January 17, 2019:
The Health & Wellness Challenge inspires thousands to live healthier
The Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge continues to motivate Western New Yorkers to take charge of their own health and well-being by adopting simple, healthy habits. More than 40 prizes were awarded to participants during the most recent six-week initiative, which ran from October 22 through December 2.
