Disclosure of Artificial Intelligence Tool Use

Independent Health uses artificial intelligence, also called AI, in some parts of our business operations. AI tools are computer-based tools that can help review information, organize data, identify patterns, support customer service, or improve business processes.

Independent Health may use AI tools for purposes such as:

• helping employees find and organize information;
•  supporting customer service and administrative activities;
• improving business processes and operational efficiency;
• supporting security, privacy, compliance, and fraud prevention activities;
• reviewing data to help improve the quality and consistency of our services; and
• supporting certain health plan operations.

Independent Health requires a human review of AI tool output and maintains human oversight and appropriate review processes.

Independent Health may share or provide access to protected health information, also called PHI, with some AI tool vendors when needed for approved business purposes. When Independent Health shares PHI with an AI tool vendor, we require safeguards to protect that information. These safeguards may include business associate agreements, privacy and security requirements, access controls, monitoring, and other protections required by law. Independent Health is committed to using AI tools in a fair, responsible, and in a non-discriminatory way. We do not use AI tools to unlawfully discriminate against any person. This includes discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, age, disability, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, or any other protected class under federal or state law.
