During this unprecedented situation, we continue to look for ways to support the health and well-being of our members and the Western New York community. Independent Health, the Independent Health Foundation, and our partners are working to provide you with resources that can help you stay active and connected, even if it is virtually.

Buffalo PAL PlayStreets

PlayStreets presented by Independent Health is back for the fall! Every Tuesday and Thursday, this program brings FREE sports clinics and fitness equipment to youth ages 5-18 in the City of Buffalo, designed to promote physical activity and mental health. All fitness activities will incorporate social distancing and adhere to the CDC’s safety guidelines. 

Dates:  September 14 – December 2

Times:  4:30 – 6:30 p.m.

Good for the Neighborhood®

Improve your health with the Independent Health Foundation’s Good for the Neighborhood program! Join us for three distribution events in October where health resources as well as free fruits and vegetables will be provided (while supplies last).

Reddy Bikes

Reddy for an adventure? Reddy Bikeshare in partnership with Independent Health, now in its sixth season, offers nearly 400 bikes and 90 stations throughout Buffalo and Niagara Falls to help you get moving. Whether you commute to work, ride to school, visit your favorite park or take a leisurely roll – it’s a great way to get healthy, have fun and explore by bike! Independent Health members receive a discount on annual memberships.

Slow Roll Buffalo

Independent Health is proud to sponsor Slow Roll Buffalo, which leads community bike rides along unique routes through the city every Monday evening through October. All ages, skill levels and bikes are encouraged to join the fun. Masks are required and helmets are encouraged for all riders (ages 14 and under are required to wear a helmet by law).

Join us for the October 11 ride at PUSH Buffalo and receive a FREE giveaway, while supplies last!

Dates:  Mondays, now – October 25

Times:  Meet at 5:30 p.m., ride at 6 p.m.

Blood Pressure Monitoring Program

Brought to you by Good for the Neighborhood®, the Blood Pressure Monitoring Program is an ongoing project built to give communities the power to understand, prevent, and control high blood pressure. Participants receive a free blood pressure cuff (while supplies last) and earn rewards for taking weekly readings. Registration required. 

Wellness Walks at Tifft

Looking for a way to enjoy the fresh air while getting your steps in? Join us every Thursday morning at Tifft Nature Preserve for Wellness Walks presented by Independent Health! All ages are encouraged to attend these free weekly walks, guided by a knowledgeable volunteer, while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Please call (716) 825-6397 to confirm the walks will be taking place each week.

You can also book a Private Guided Tour at Tifft for up to eight people! Choose from different themes, including family fishing, tracking the wild, watercolors outdoors and more. Reservations are required.

Don’t let the cooler weather stop you from being active outdoors! As the official health and wellness partner of Buffalo RiverWorks, our members save 20 percent on healthy activities like zip-lining, rock wall-climbing, the ropes course and all water sport activities. The Buffalo Waterfront’s Outer Harbor is open year-round for you to enjoy! Get your steps in on the 3-mile Independent Health Wellness Trail, stretching from Wilkeson Pointe to Lakeside Bike Park presented by Independent Health – perfect for walking, biking, running, jogging and more, offering scenic views of the lake and cityscape.

Buffalo Museum of Science

Explore YOU presented by Independent Health is open at the Buffalo Museum of Science! This health sciences-themed studio offers visitors a hands-on experience to explore all there is to know about the human body and the importance of making healthy decisions. Some of the hands-on interactions have been modified to adhere to CDC guidelines to ensure a safe yet fun experience for all guests. Independent Health members save 10 percent on annual memberships to the Buffalo Museum of Science, and eligible members can use their Health ExtrasSM card to cover the cost. 

Dates:  Wednesdays – Sundays

The Independent Health Foundation is focused on providing fun, accessible and easy ways for families to get healthy and stay connected during this continued time of social distancing. This includes at-home workout videos, healthy recipes, nutrition tips, free activity sheets and more! Follow the Foundation on Facebook for more information and resources.

The Independent Health Medically Oriented Gym at Jericho Road (MOG)

Facilities are open at the Independent Health Medically Oriented Gym at Jericho Road! The MOG is a great place for anyone to use to get and stay healthy, featuring an indoor fitness center with free weights and machines, custom exercise programs, physical therapy services, nutrition consultation and more. Free outdoor fitness classes, as well as virtual classes, are also offered to the community. If you’re not sure how to start, schedule a complimentary virtual consult with one of their Exercise Specialists by calling (716) 431-5141 or email mog@jrchc.org.

Explore Buffalo

Looking for a new way to stay active? Get outdoors for a walk! Among the many health benefits of walking, like reducing anxiety, it can also help you connect with your community. Explore Buffalo offers up to 2-mile walking routes with historical stops and fun facts about where you are and what you’re looking at. Check out some of the suggested routes, like the historic homes of Allentown or Elmwood Village Victorians – or find a route of your own!
