Independent Health and the Independent Health Foundation are excited to work with a variety of local partners to help Western New Yorkers get healthy, stay active, and have fun in the sun! Independent Health members receive a discount with their ID card at select locations.*

Buffalo PAL PlayStreets

PlayStreets presented by Independent Health is back for the winter! Every Tuesday and Thursday, the Police Athletic League of Buffalo brings FREE outdoor sports clinics and fitness equipment to youth ages 5-18 in the City of Buffalo. This seasonal program is designed to promote physical activity and mental health. Be sure to dress appropriately for the weather.

Dates:  January 17 – March 9 (Tuesdays and Thursdays)

Wellness Walks at Tifft

Looking for a way to enjoy the fresh air while getting your steps in? Join us every Thursday morning at Tifft Nature Preserve for Wellness Walks presented by Independent Health! All ages are encouraged to attend these free weekly walks, guided by a knowledgeable volunteer, while enjoying the sights and sounds of nature. Please call (716) 825-6397 to confirm the walks will be taking place each week. 

Location:  Tifft Nature Preserve, 1200 Fuhrmann Boulevard

Buffalo RiverWorks

Don’t let the cooler weather stop you from being active outdoors! As the official health and wellness partner of Buffalo RiverWorks, our members save 20 percent on healthy activities like ice skating and curling, as well as discounts on skate rentals. Roller skating is also offered on select dates. Be sure to visit Buffalo RiverWorks online for the latest schedule. Staying for a bite to eat? Be sure to look for the orange Healthy Options® sticker on the menu for items that are lower in fat, saturated fat, cholesterol, and sodium – thanks to the Independent Health Foundation, they’re making it easy to eat healthy when dining out.

Outer Harbor Buffalo

The Buffalo Waterfront’s Outer Harbor is open year-round for you to enjoy! Get your steps in on the 3-mile Independent Health Wellness Trail, stretching from Wilkeson Pointe to Lakeside Bike Park presented by Independent Health – perfect for walking, biking, running, jogging and more, offering scenic views of the lake and cityscape. Be sure to look for the iconic “Round Man” featured along the trail, standing at almost three stories high and weighing 2,500 pounds!

Location:  Wilkeson Pointe, 225 Fuhrmann Boulevard, and Lakeside Bike Park, 825 Fuhrmann Boulevard

Improve your health with the Independent Health Foundation’s Good for the Neighborhood program! Join us at various locations across Buffalo and Niagara Falls to receive FREE fruits and vegetables (while supplies last) as well as health and wellness resources that can help you eat better, be more active, connect with your doctor, and more. Be sure the check the program website for the most up-to-date information on event dates, times, and locations.

Buffalo Museum of Science

Explore YOU presented by Independent Health is open at the Buffalo Museum of Science! This health sciences-themed studio offers visitors a hands-on experience to explore all there is to know about the human body and the importance of making healthy decisions. Interested in a membership to the Museum? Eligible Independent Health members can use their Health ExtrasSM card to cover the cost! 

Dates:  Mondays – Sundays

Times:  10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

The Independent Health Medically Oriented Gym at Jericho Road (MOG)

Facilities are open at the Independent Health Medically Oriented Gym at Jericho Road! The MOG is a great place for anyone to use to get and stay healthy, featuring an indoor fitness center with free weights and machines, custom exercise programs, physical therapy services, nutrition consultation and more. If you’re not sure how to start, schedule a complimentary virtual consult with one of their Exercise Specialists by calling (716) 431-5141 or email mog@jrchc.org.

Explore Buffalo

Looking for a new way to stay active? Get outdoors for a walk! Among the many health benefits of walking, like reducing anxiety, it can also help you connect with your community. With support from Independent Health, Explore Buffalo offers a variety of 2-mile walking routes with historical stops and fun facts about where you are and what you’re looking at. Check out some of the suggested routes, like the historic homes of Allentown or Elmwood Village Victorians – or find a route of your own!
