Fitness in the Parks

Ever wish you could attend a fitness class outside? You can!

Independent Health and YMCA Buffalo Niagara have teamed up for the fifth year to offer Fitness in the Parks – a series of FREE outdoor fitness classes designed to encourage physical activity and healthy lifestyles.

Western New Yorkers of all ages and skill levels are encouraged to attend these FREE 60-minute classes, led by YMCA certified instructors.

Now, you never have to trade good weather for a workout again. So get out and get moving at a park near you!

Bassett Park
Zumba ® – Mondays, 6 p.m.
Cardio Kickboxing – Fridays, 6 p.m.
Classes located near the bandstand.

Garrison Park
Bootcamp – Wednesdays, 6 p.m.
Classes located near corner of Garrison and Park Drive.

Bidwell Park
Yoga – Saturdays, 10 a.m.
Class located near Elmwood across from farmer’s market.

NEW! Buffalo Niagara Medical Campus
Yoga – Wednesdays, 5:30 p.m.
Classes located at Ellicott Park at the intersection of Ellicott and Virginia.

NEW! Buffalo RiverWorks
Boot Camp – Saturdays, 10 a.m.

Delaware Park
Yoga – Sundays, 10 a.m.
Bootcamp – Tuesdays, 6 p.m.

Larkin Square

Town Park
Pilates – Tuesdays, 10 a.m.

Classes located between shelters 12 & 13. Park behind library.

Allen Park

Hartley Park (Lakewood Beach)

Westwood Park

Day Road Park

Goehle Marina (Widewaters Marina)
Boot Camp – Wednesdays, 6 p.m.
Yoga – Wednesdays, 7 p.m.
Zumba ® – Saturdays, 10 a.m.

Classes located near Cold Springs Road North and Lake Avenue South.

Chestnut Ridge
Yoga and Zumba ® (alternating weeks) – Tuesdays, 6 p.m. Classes located near the casino.

Ralph Wilson Stadium (starting July 11, no class on August 8)
Boot Camp – Mondays, 6 p.m.
Classes located on the field. Park in Lot 2; enter at Gate 2, Sections 133/134.

Ellicott Creek
Yoga – Thursdays, 6 p.m.
Classes take place by the outdoor fitness center.
Who can participate?

Any resident of Western New York, of any age, can participate in the Fitness in the Parks class offerings. It is recommended that you check with your physician before embarking on any type of fitness program.

What if the weather is bad?

Classes will be canceled in the event of rain or poor weather.

How can I sign up?

No sign-up or registration is required! Just show up at the scheduled time.

What classes do you offer?

The following classes are offered throughout the summer:

Bodyweight Strength – A total body-sculpting session that targets every muscle group. Participants are encouraged to bring dumbbells and a yoga mat.

Boot Camp – Join us for this challenging yet enjoyable workout that focuses on speed, endurance, agility, strength, power moves and cardiovascular training.

Cardio Dance – Get moving with this class that sets choreography to music. Enhance your cardiovascular endurance, muscle tone, flexibility and coordination!

Cardio Kickboxing – A great way to relieve stress and tension, this aerobic based class combines martial arts, boxing, aerobic exercises, and strengthening exercises to increase flexibility, balance, strength, and coordination. Learn the proper way to kick and punch in a safe, non-contact environment.

Gentle Tai Chi – An introduction to Tai Chi that anyone can do. No equipment needed – just come in comfortable, supportive shoes.

Pilates – Strengthen the body’s core muscles, including the abdominals and lower back, with this method of body conditioning. It will tone the body and increase flexibility.

Yoga – Enjoy gentle, effective postures that promote stretching, strengthening and relaxation. Benefits include increased blood circulation, improved mental awareness, strengthened muscles and reduced stress! We recommend bringing your own yoga mat.

Zumba® – Are you ready to party yourself into shape? Forget the workout, just lose yourself in the music and find yourself in shape at the original dance-fitness party. Zumba® classes feature exotic rhythms set to high-energy Latin and international beats. Before you know it, you'll be getting fit and your energy levels will be soaring! It's easy to do, effective and totally exhilarating.
