Independent Health's Community Partnerships

At Independent Health, we are dedicated to helping improve the health of the Western New York (WNY) community. Our partnerships with various organizations across the area offer a number of opportunities that allow us to promote health and wellness and get others engaged in their health.

We are working together to provide the education, support and tools individuals need to lead healthier lives. Below are some of the valued partnerships we’ve created in the community.

Biggest Loser

Inspired by NBC’s hit weight-loss series, "The Biggest Loser," the Biggest Loser Resort Niagara focuses on exercise, healthy nutrition and education. The rigorous program engages participants in their own health and gives them the tools they need to adopt lifestyle changes to stay healthy and reduce their risk of chronic disease. Independent Health is excited to be the official health and wellness partner of the Buffalo Bills! Together, we aim to better the health and well-being of Western New York through a variety of initiatives, including the Independent Health and Buffalo Bills Health & Wellness Challenge. This six-week program is offered twice each year, in the spring and fall, and encourages healthy living with a focus on fitness and nutrition. It’s free to join and open to the community!

We also work together to encourage physical activity and healthy eating among our community’s youth, both in school and at home. This is accomplished through the Independent Health Foundation’s Fitness for Kids Challenge and the Buffalo Bills Play 60 Challenge.

GObike Buffalo

Healthier bodies and a cleaner environment? It’s the best of both worlds! By serving as a corporate partner with GObike Buffalo, we helped a great idea blossom into a successful non-profit that focuses on bringing environmentally-friendly transportation options to the City of Buffalo. Each year we help support some of the group’s community programs, which attracted more than 35,000 bicyclists in 2017, including:

The SkyRide
As presenting sponsor, Independent Health helped Gobike Buffalo launch the SkyRide in 2014, which took cyclists over Buffalo’s Skyway for the first time in history. This is GObike Buffalo’s signature event and largest annual fundraiser.

Tour de Farms
The Tour de Farms annual bike ride travels 35 miles – from Buffalo’s West Side to Alden – celebrating sustainable transportation and our connection to the local food system. Family and urban farms, as well as community gardens, are visited along the way.

GObike Buffalo is also heavily involved with Slow Roll Buffalo and Reddy Bikeshare, two programs that are also sponsored by Independent Health, for which the non-profit has helped with by distributing bicycle safety accessories (e.g., lights, helmets, locks) and clearing debris from neighborhoods and streets.

More information can be found on the GObike Buffalo website.
