At-home, Over-the-Counter Test Kits

Free At-home Tests through COVIDTests.gov for a limited time

As of December 15, all U.S. households can order a total of four at-home COVID-19 tests that will be mailed directly to them for free. Orders for this round of testing will begin to ship starting the week of December 19th and continue in the weeks ahead.

People who have difficulty accessing the internet or need additional support placing an order can call 1-800-232-0233 (TTY 1-888-720-7489) to get help in English, Spanish, and more than 150 other languages – 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. E.T., Monday to Friday and 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. E.T. on weekends. Commercial plans 

Members may visit a pharmacy, a store or online retailer to obtain an at-home over-the-counter (OTC) COVID-19 diagnostic test authorized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).  View additional details.

Self-Funded Plans

Coverage depends on the employer group. Some self-funded groups may cover OTC tests under the pharmacy benefit. Check with your employer. If your self-funded plan covers it through the medical benefit, view additional details.
 

Medicare Advantage Plans

Medicare beneficiaries, including members of Medicare Advantage plans, can get up to eight free OTC tests. Each calendar month through the end of the Public Health Emergency period.   

  • To get the free tests, you will have to go to a pharmacy that is participating in this Federal program. You will need to show your red, white and blue Medicare card. To view the pharmacies, please visit the Federal Government website.
  • This is a Federal program, so Medicare Advantage members are not able to buy the tests on their own and submit a receipt for reimbursement.  You must visit one of the pharmacies participating in the Federal program.
     

MediSource, Essential, and Child Health Plus

Independent Health covers the test kits for these state programs with no member cost share. MediSource and Child Health Plus members may get one at-home testing kit per week.  Essential plan members may get two testing kits per week. The at-home test kits must be obtained at the pharmacy and the billing processed by the pharmacy with a prescription given by a medical provider or may be obtained at your primary care doctor’s office. Members may get these tests if they have symptoms or not.
