Getting Started With Alexa

Once you've downloaded the Amazon Alexa app from the App Store or Google Play, it's easy to enable the Independent Health skill.

Enable the Skill

Open the Alexa app. Tap on Skills and search for Independent Health. Tap Enable.

Link Your Account

Enter your login credentials. If you don't have an account, you'll be asked to register.

Talk To Alexa

Now you can talk to Alexa about your Independent Health account.

    How do I enable the Independent Health skill for Amazon Alexa?

    There are two ways you can enable the Independent Health skill through Amazon. To enable the Independent Health skill in the Alexa app: From the left navigation panel, select Skills. Use the search bar to enter “Independent Health” and hit enter. When you see the Independent Health skill, select Enable Skill. Alternatively, you may enable the Independent Health skill online through your web browser now. You will need to sign into Amazon to complete the process.

    I’ve enabled the skill, why can’t Alexa access Independent Health?

    Once you’ve enabled a skill, you must link the skill to your Independent Health account using your username and password in order for your Alexa device to. If you don’t have an Independent Health account already, you’ll need to register for one at the prompt or click here to do so now: myih.com/register.

    I am not able to sign in to my Independent Health account.

    There’s a possibility that that username and/or password that you have entered are incorrect. Double check your credentials and try again. If you’re still experiencing difficulties logging in, you may attempt to retrieve your sign-in information from our website. Retrieve Your Username or Reset Your Password.

    How do I disable the Independent Health skill for Amazon Alexa?

    There are two ways you can disable the Independent Health skill through Amazon. To disable the Independent Health skill in the Alexa app: From the left navigation panel, select Skills. Use the search bar to enter “Independent Health” and select Enter. When you see the Independent Health skill, select Disable Skill. Alternatively, you may disable the Independent Health skill online through your web browser. You will need to sign into Amazon to complete the process. Note that once the skill is disabled, Amazon Alexa no longer has access to your Independent Health account information.

    What kind of information about my account can Alexa get?

    Alexa can tell you many useful things about your Independent Health account. For example, you can ask for your latest deductible status, your cost for an urgent care visit, the latest balance on your Health Extras card, and more.

    How do I talk to Alexa?

    Simply begin any question you may have with, “Alexa, ask Independent Health…” and Alexa will attempt to respond. Here are a few examples that you can try:

    What can’t I do with Alexa?

    At this time, Alexa will not share any Personal Health Information such as claims, cost of services, medical services rendered, etc. Alexa also won’t be able to place any calls directly to Independent Health or to a medical provider on your behalf. Interactions with Alexa will not result in any changes to your Independent Health account.

    Why did I get an error message when I tried to get my account information?

    Sometimes Alexa is unable to access the information on your account due to various technical reasons. Try again in a few minutes, or try logging into your member account if the need is urgent.

    When can I use Alexa to get Independent Health information?

    Your Independent Health account information is available through Alexa anytime you want. As long as your Alexa device is switched on and the Independent Health skill is enabled and linked to your account, your information will be ready when you are.

Privacy and Security

    How does Alexa know information related to my Independent Health account?

    Upon enabling the Independent Health skill, you are prompted to enter your Independent Health username and password. Doing so allows Alexa to access your account information. Alexa cannot access your information unless you have given it permission to do so by linking your Independent Health member account to the skill.

    Will Alexa share my Independent Health username and password with Amazon?

    Independent Health does not share your username and password with anyone.

    What if I no longer want Alexa to access information related to my Independent Health account?

    To prevent Alexa from accessing your Independent Health information and responding to questions about your account, disable the Independent Health skill from your Alexa app. Simply locate the Independent Health skill and select Disable to unlink your account.

    Can someone else access my information?

    No one can gain access to your Independent Health username and password because you’ve linked the account to an Alexa device. When talking with Alexa, however, anyone who may hear Alexa’s responses may hear the same responses that you do. Also, be aware that enabling the Independent Health skill on your Alexa-enabled device allows other users of this device access to the Independent Health account information used by the skill.
