Independent Health Adds New Providers to List for Performing LDCT Screenings

Independent Health notified providers that Low Dose Computed Tomography (LDCT) screenings were added to our list of preventive services that feature no member liability. At that time, only Roswell Park Cancer Institute met the criteria to perform the service; however, we have recently added the following providers to the list:

  • Buffalo Medical Group
  • Buffalo MRI
  • Great Lakes Medical Imaging
  • Southtowns Radiology
  • Windsong Radiology
  • DIA @ InvisionHealth

Independent Health covers LDCT screening for lung cancer at the participating centers listed above, who offer a comprehensive screening program, which includes all of the following components:

  1. Follows the US Preventive Screening Recommendations for asymptomatic high risk individuals defined above;

  2. Offers smoking cessation program, including combination therapy with counseling and medications;

  3. Appropriate follow-up protocols for positive results, including established relationships with specialty providers including thoracic surgeons, oncologists;

  4. Clear criteria for performing invasive procedures such as those established by the National Comprehensive Cancer Network;

  5. Compile registry data for future process improvements, including screening results, follow-up and outcomes clearly documented;

  6. Have protocols in place to facilitate patient compliance in future annual LDCT screenings.

Future notifications will be sent out as other facilities are added to the list of those who meet the criteria.

Additional LDCT Screening Information:

The United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPTF) issued recommendations for annual preventive screening for lung cancer with LDCT in adults ages 55 to 80 years who have a 30 pack-year smoking history and currently smoke or have quit within the past 15 years. Screening should be discontinued once a person has not smoked for 15 years or develops a health problem that substantially limits life expectancy or the ability or willingness to have curative lung surgery.
