Reminder about tablet splitting

Reminder about tablet splitting for our Medicare Advantage plan members

Although our Medicare Advantage members are eligible to take advantage of our voluntary tablet splitting program, Independent Health is no longer able to offer these members a reduced copayment for tablet splitting. Independent Health made this change, effective January 1, 2015, in order to comply with federal regulations set forth by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS).

This change only impacts our Medicare line of business. Our Commercial members still receive reduced copayments for tablet splitting.

The benefit of tablet splitting for our Medicare Advantage members

By splitting higher-cost medications, our Medicare Advantage members may be able to avoid the Medicare Part D Coverage Gap, thus reducing their overall prescription costs. Therefore, we encourage you to speak to your Medicare Advantage patients to determine if tablet splitting is an appropriate option for them.

Please note: When prescribing medications for patients to split, it’s important that you write the prescription the way you intend the medication to be taken. We regularly review the utilization patterns of our members to ensure they are taking their medications safely and as prescribed.
