Lowest Overall Complaint Rates Statewide

2015 New York State Consumer Guide to Health Insurance Companies shows Independent Health has the lowest overall complaint rates statewide

Buffalo, N.Y., October 13, 2015 – Independent Health was the top ranked company among HMO and EPO/PPO plans in New York State with the lowest number of overall complaints filed and upheld in 2014, according to the 2015 New York State Consumer Guide to Health Insurance Companies.

The New York State Department of Financial Services (DFS) recently released this guide, which ranks health insurance companies based on complaints in the areas of prompt pay to providers, appeals after denials for services that were not considered medically necessary, and grievances related to referrals or benefits. The purpose of this guide is to help consumers choose a health insurance company based on quality of care and services.

This year’s guide includes data showing there were no complaints filed against Independent Health in 2014 that were upheld by the DFS in favor of the member or provider. Complaints typically involve issues related to prompt payment, reimbursement, coverage, benefits, rates and premiums. In addition, Independent Health was once again among the plans with the lowest number of external appeals filed and upheld by the DFS.

“The statistics included in the 2015 New York State Consumer Guide to Health Insurance Companies demonstrate how Independent Health continues to work closely with physicians to make sure our members are receiving the appropriate, high-quality care they deserve. Through this collaborative approach, we are able to resolve concerns and issues without having them reach a higher level, which can be very stressful and disruptive for the member,” said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., president and CEO, Independent Health. “These rankings serve as an important reminder of why it is important for consumers to look carefully at a health plan’s overall value, service, and coverage when shopping for health insurance.”
