Independent Health to offer Child Health Plus in N

Independent Health now offers Child Health Plus in Niagara County

BUFFALO, N.Y., September 23, 2014 – The New York State Department of Financial Services has approved Independent Health’s application to offer Child Health Plus in Niagara County beginning Oct. 1.

Child Health Plus is a New York State sponsored health insurance program for children under age 19 who are not eligible for Medicaid and who have limited or no health insurance. The program covers preventive and sick visits for children, as well as hospital and emergency services, prescription drugs, and dental and vision care – all with no copayment.

Independent Health currently covers nearly 1,900 children enrolled in Child Health Plus in Erie County.

"We are pleased to expand Independent Health’s Child Health Plus program into Niagara County," said Robert Tracy, senior business director, government products, Independent Health. "Offering Child Health Plus aligns with Independent Health’s commitment to improve access and affordability to health coverage."

"There’s a misperception that Child Health Plus is only for low-income children or is an alternative to Medicaid. However, the good news is that most children who are New York State residents are eligible for Child Health Plus. The only difference is the amount charged for the monthly premium, which is based on household income. Even if a child does not qualify for premium assistance, the monthly premium amount is still relatively affordable," said Tracy.

Child Health Plus is available to children who are residents of New York State and:

  • Are under the age of 19
  • Have limited or no health insurance
  • Are not eligible for Medicaid
