(Amherst, NY) – YMCA Buffalo Niagara cut the ribbon on its newest and largest facility, the Independent Health Family Branch YMCA, at 6:30 p.m., Friday, January 11, 2013. A ribbon cutting and reception was held from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at the facility, located at 150 Tech Drive in Amherst, to allow key donors the opportunity to see the facility before it opens for business at 5:30 am, Monday, January 14, 2013.

The new Y is the first facility of this caliber, not only for YMCA Buffalo Niagara, but for the community as a whole, housing an Independent Health member information center, rehabilitation offices run by Buffalo Rehab Group, and a demonstration kitchen sponsored by Wegmans, among a host of other amenities.

“As our community has evolved over the last 160 years, the YMCA has continually adapted to meet people’s ever changing needs. When we decided to expand our reach in the Northtowns by constructing this facility, we wanted to truly make an impact on people’s lives”, said John Murray, President/CEO YMCA Buffalo Niagara. “By developing an economically efficient collaborative effort with health care providers and Independent Health, we are able to significantly expand the YMCAs menu and delivery of health related programming, in turn enhancing the lives of families, adults, and seniors living far beyond our current service area.”

Independent Health is committed to prevention programs and promoting healthy lifestyles through valuable partnerships such as this with YMCA Buffalo Niagara. Prevention and wellness initiatives are crucial to improve the population’s rates of preventable illness and lowering rising health care costs. Up to 75 percent of medical costs are due to chronic conditions, such as diabetes and heart disease, much of which are preventable through better lifestyle choices.

As part of the new branch offerings, Independent Health will offer health and wellness programming and resources for individuals and families to achieve their fitness goals in a dedicated, multi-purpose space. The programs will engage the community and offer the necessary tools for participants to take personal responsibility for maintaining and improving their health.

“The grand opening of this state-of-the-art facility is the result of a vision to engage our community and develop a culture of health in Western New York,” said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., president and CEO of Independent Health. “As part of this valuable partnership with YMCA Buffalo Niagara, Independent Health will be able to connect with our community through health and wellness activities with the ultimate goal of managing and preventing chronic conditions, thus lowering the medical cost trend. Collaborations, such as this one can encourage healthier lifestyles and make a real impact on the health of our community. We’re excited to see this facility thrive and the health of our community improve.”

This state-of-the art 94,000 square foot facility located in Amherst has two 7,700-square-foot gymnasiums, an indoor running/jogging track, fitness center/weight room, two swimming pools (a zero entry warm water pool and a six-lane, 25-yard lap pool), aerobic studios, adventure room, child watch, multi-purpose rooms, locker rooms, and ample parking.

The new Y will replace the existing 26,000 square-foot Northeast Family YMCA Branch (built in 1962) which is located on Main Street in Snyder. This facility will be transferred to its new owners, Daemen College, when the new facility opens.
