NCQA highest accreditation

Independent Health once again awarded NCQA’s Highest Accreditation Status of “Excellent”

BUFFALO, N.Y., (January 18, 2013) - For the 16th consecutive year, Independent Health has received the National Committee for Quality Assurance’s (NCQA) highest accreditation status of “Excellent” for its Commercial HMO/POS and Medicare lines of business.

NCQA is a private, non-profit organization dedicated to improving health care quality. As the leading external review organization for the managed care industry, NCQA has accredited about two thirds of the nation’s health plans, which collectively cover about 75 percent of all enrollees. “Excellent” accreditation is granted only to those health plans that exhibit levels of service and clinical quality that meet or exceed NCQA’s rigorous requirements for consumer protection and quality improvement.

“For Independent Heath, this recognition from NCQA is third-party proof that our programs and initiatives to achieve improved patient care and satisfaction are truly working,” said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., president and CEO of Independent Health. “Earning NCQA’s highest accreditation status also demonstrates the strength of our collaboration with our physician and provider partners.”

NCQA recently conducted a thorough onsite accreditation review at Independent Health. The process included evaluations of more than 70 NCQA standards in five core areas: Quality Management and Improvement, Utilization Management, Credentialing of Providers, Members’ Rights and Responsibilities and Member Connectivity.

In addition, Independent Health’s Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) and Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (CAHPS) rates were also reviewed as part of the accreditation process. HEDIS and CAHPS are measurement tools that evaluate the performance of health plans in terms of clinical quality and customer service. These rates must be in the highest range of national performance in order to receive the top rating.

“Independent Health has a long and proud tradition of providing high-quality, high-value health coverage,” said Dr. Cropp. “Our accreditation status reassures our members that the care they receive and the physicians who provide that care are meeting and exceeding the industry’s highest standards.”
