Independent Health Recognized as one of America's Healthiest Companies

BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 3, 2013) – Independent Health has been recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Companies by the Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA).

Independent Health earned the Well Workplace Gold status in recognition of its outstanding employee wellness programs. WELCOA Well Workplace Awards honor America's healthiest companies for fully embracing responsibility to maximize the health and well-being of employees.

"We are honored to receive WELCOA’s Gold Well Workplace distinction," said Michael W. Cropp, M.D., president and chief executive officer, Independent Health. "At Independent Health, we believe it’s imperative to foster a culture of health that emphasizes and supports wellness through educating and empowering employees to lead healthy lifestyles. As a result, our employees are better equipped to achieve our goals of helping our members and the community be healthier."

The Gold status recognizes organizations that have developed comprehensive programs that produce measurable results. The Well Workplace Award initiative is a national competition where companies of all sizes and types submit extensive applications highlighting their health promotion programming efforts. Companies must meet seven criteria:

  • Securing senior-level support
  • Developing a wellness team
  • Collecting organizational data to drive health efforts
  • Writing an operating plan
  • Implementing interventions
  • Fostering a supportive environment
  • Evaluating outcomes

Since the inception of the Well Workplace program in 1991, only 400 organizations have met the criteria and been recognized as part of the cadre of "Americas Healthiest Companies."

Employees also have access to healthy vending machines, walking work stations and an on-site fitness center.
