BUFFALO, N.Y. (April 3, 2013) – Independent Health has been recognized as one of America’s Healthiest Companies by the Wellness Councils of America (WELCOA).
Independent Health earned the Well Workplace Gold status in recognition of its outstanding employee wellness programs. WELCOA Well Workplace Awards honor America's healthiest companies for fully embracing responsibility to maximize the health and well-being of employees.

The Gold status recognizes organizations that have developed comprehensive programs that produce measurable results. The Well Workplace Award initiative is a national competition where companies of all sizes and types submit extensive applications highlighting their health promotion programming efforts. Companies must meet seven criteria:
- Securing senior-level support
- Developing a wellness team
- Collecting organizational data to drive health efforts
- Writing an operating plan
- Implementing interventions
- Fostering a supportive environment
- Evaluating outcomes
Since the inception of the Well Workplace program in 1991, only 400 organizations have met the criteria and been recognized as part of the cadre of "Americas Healthiest Companies."
Independent Health offers a worksite wellness program called "Healthy Me," where employees are encouraged to take part in a variety of healthy challenges, participate in on-site biometric screenings and track health and fitness goals through an online program. Employees also have access to healthy vending machines, walking work stations and an on-site fitness center. Wellness tips are provided to employees through monthly e-mails.Since the inception of the Well Workplace program in 1991, only 400 organizations have met the criteria and been recognized as part of the cadre of "Americas Healthiest Companies."
